Bats
- Bats in the attic?
Although eight species of bats live in CT, only two species - the Big Brown Bat and the Little Brown Bat commonly live in manmade structures. Very similar in description, the Big Brown obviously is slightly larger than the latter. Colonizing animals and the only mammal to actually fly, they make their home in the warmth of a house attic or church steeple. They will also live under bridges, and inside caves during hibernation.
The usual complaints are bats flying around inside the living area, bats exiting a house or the accumulation of bat guano in the attic or outside underneath the entry hole. Any bats found inside the living area should be contained or killed without damage to the head, and submitted for rabies testing, especially if elderly, young children or handicapped persons are living in the building, or if found in the bedroom of a sleeping person. That said - In general, bats are not dangerous. Like any other mammal, they can carry rabies. Less than one percent of all bats are infected with the virus.

Thank you for coming so promptly, I'm going to build a storage shed in the spring - that storage area is too claustrophobic for me!
Thanks, Nancy T.
PS - The story about the bat that held my Christmas stuff hostage was good for a few laughs.
