Skunks

- Mephitis-mephitis means “bad odor-bad odor”. An appropriate name for this otherwise gentle animal. Digging underneath a step, deck, porch or shed may be the only indicator of a skunk’s presence on your property. During certain times of the year, breeding and birthing season, will give a stronger indication of their existence. This is when they sometimes spray or leak their essence. Although, it may also be caused when startled by another animal or loud noise. Skunks are second only to raccoons for carrying the rabies virus.
